    Imagine

Some of us have had this discussion before but I thought I'd bring it up again and see if maybe Doc or someone else could put some persuasive spin on it. That is doing a cover of John Lennon's Imagine. There are many die hard fans who love the song, that don't think anyone should touch it, and same can be said for many of us about other songs. I've heard some pretty horrid attempts of I'd die without you. BUT, there are a few people I think that have the voice and talent to pull off a really nice cover. Be and George Michael are probably the only two with John Mayer being a distant third that could do it. Basing it off vocal talent and respect for the song. I'd still love to hear Be cover this. Thoughts?
Something is neither good nor bad but thinking makes it so.

I say cover it! John Lennon's solo efforts are by no means "sacred". As Tybris says - if there are people out there butchering I'd Die Without You, then why can't Be do the best damn cover of Image ever? I know he would. Do it Be. DO IT!!!!

    Just do it.

Completely agree with Tybris and A.Dulteror. Good cover is nice thing. I am confident that Be will do it right

I'm sure Be could do an outstanding cover of Imagine.

It's all the hoops to jump thru to get it done, that'd be the tough part.

Yeah, but is it too sentimental and cliche to cover?

Personally, I hate that song (Imagine). I didn't even like Seal's version of it.

Marta Wiley's cover of Imagine made me love it.
I've always liked the lyrics though.

I'm with Louis. I never did like the song.
Trying to speak more objectively, though, Imagine is a song that exemplifies the times in which it was created, and in my opinion, in a contemporary context, it just doesn't work very well. Musically, it's simplistic (typical of the stuff John wrote without Paul's help), and lyrically, it seems to be full of bright ideas that weren't quite thought out.
It's my feeling that the ongoing popularity of this song is primarily due to flower child nostalgia and the tragic untimely death of the artist, rather than the song's own merit.

And Louis, I love Seal too, but I'm not too fond of any cover he's ever done. His vibe is so unique, that it just doesn't ring true for me when he's singing someone else's words.
However, I do like covers of Seal. I loved George Michael's mashup of Killer and Papa Was a Rolling Stone.

Great cover! Probably my favorite Seal cover.

And Wheeljak, I almost agree with you on Seal covering other songs. His vibe is unique and his own songs are tailor made for his voice. I will say that the last album he did was not great to me. I love "Amazing" and the opening cut of the album, but that's about it. Seal IV took a long time to grow on me, but it did eventually. I'm still waiting for System to grown on me, and I doubt it will.

    No, let's talk about Seal.

Yeah, I never got used to Seal IV, and I'm not sure if I will. I listened to it maybe once or twice. I remember at first Human Being took awhile to get used to, but when it hit, it HIT. Then I was like "what was my problem?".

Why don't you start a Seal thread?

Seal's "Crazy" changed something in my mentality for good. I felt so accepted when i heard it.

As for Lennon, "Strawberry Fields" changed my childhood wordl

I agree, Elizabeth. Human Being and Seal IV took a LONG time to get groovin', but they both did eventually. Seal's System, however, still hasn't grown on me. After the first two cuts, I'm done with it. Amazing is amazing. The first Seal album will always be my favorite from him, I guess. :-(

Crazy is a masterpiece from him. I love everything about that song, especially the music behind it. That song is just very well done, IMO.

Tap the lightpole and we'll be jammin all night
And ain't nobody callin' the cops
'Cause everybody's here freakin', if they're older they're doin the rock
And every block from all around
Comes runnin' to the park when they hear the sound
And soon the word's spreadin' through our part of town
    "Yo, 40 Park y'all, Jam-On's gettin down"
    Yeah...
