ever hear discussions about musicians you never really heard much from but are always hearing about , or musicians who were from before your time and been 2 daunted by the large body of work 2 get into them???
well perhaps we could do some lists 2 help each other out, of the 5 best examples of a particular artists work. i.e. five song titles
then perhaps we can all get introduced to new artists...
a few i can think of that i havent heard 2 many tracks from but who are legends are.........

Run DMC , Marvin Gaye, The Roots ... there are many more .. can anyone start the ball rolling??
just write some examples or an artist u wanna know more bout

    Marvin Gaye

The entire "What's Going On" album.
    "Distant Lover"
    "Come Get To This"
    "Let's Get It On"
    "Trouble Man"
"I Heard It Through The Grapevine"
"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with Tammy Terrel.
Just off the top of my head, there's plenty more.

I've done over 50 shows with Run DMC and consider them friends...I can't recomend a single record besides "Sucker MCs".

The Roots are legends? News to me...

    Just an older man's opinion...
    Alright
Tap the lightpole and we'll be jammin all night
And ain't nobody callin' the cops
'Cause everybody's here freakin', if they're older they're doin the rock
And every block from all around
Comes runnin' to the park when they hear the sound
And soon the word's spreadin' through our part of town
    "Yo, 40 Park y'all, Jam-On's gettin down"
    Yeah...

everything by pm dawn and newcleus(hows that for a shameless plug  )

i dont think i could write a list cuz im such a completist when it comes to musicians that id probably reccomend everything

when in doubt..the best way to get into an artist is a greates hits album..what do you think coz? is that the main tool of a best of, to scratch the surface of what an artist contains in his work?.....

i disagree with that hero....i think by stuffing the singles onto a bestof and getting the listener to like that first..it makes it better when the person finds the true art in the album tracks he later discovers..

if i wouldnt have liked paper doll...i wouldnt have grown to like "presence of mirrors".....this is an example

    here u go........

A talented drummer whose music stretches from jazz to fusion, rock, funk, and pop, Alphonse Mouzon made his first record date in 1969 with Gil Evans. After freelancing in New York, Mouzon was with Roy Ayers during 1970-1971, was the original drummer with Weather Report (1971-1972), played with McCoy Tyner, and then during 1973-1975 was with Larry Coryell's Eleventh House. He has since freelanced; worked with Al DiMeola, George Benson, Herbie Hancock (1979-1982); and led his own groups, leading dates for Blue Note, MPS, Optimism, and Pausa, plus his own Tenacious label. — Scott Yanow

    recommended tracks (by allmusic) were

    All That Jazz from Survivor

Come and See What I've Got from Sky Is the Limit

Allison from On Top of the World

Seduction from Night is Still Young

I Don't Want to Lose This Feeling from Distant Lover

Lady in Red from Distant Lover

By All Means from By All Means

    Anticipation from Survivor

Why Don't You Break It from Sky Is the Limit

Don't Break My Funk from Sky Is the Limit

We can't find a way to squeeze in my songs from my second favorite group, Earth, Wind, & Fire?

    "Reasons"
    "Devotion"
    "After The Love Has Gone"
    "Boogie Wonderland" --the disco favorite
"That's The Way of the World"
and who could forget the instrumental favorite that many pseudo-Jazz groups have butchered up over the years (played originally with Ramsey Lewis, I believe) "Sun Goddess" (Bop be bop bop bop de dow de ay oh, bop bop bay oh, bay oh, ohhhhh! something like that.)
    I love the summer months!

Actually, "Sun Goddess" was Ramsey Lewis from his album of the same name, with EW&F producing, playing, and doing those awesome vocals.

Allow me to add some of my favorites to your list Louis...

"Can't Hide Love"...OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!
"Keep Your Head To The Sky"
    "Power"
    "Evil"
    "Fantasy"

Many many many more...boy don't get me started!

Damm, when I hear most of ya'll reminiscin over the music of the 80s and 90s, I feel so sorry for ya'll. The 70s was the greatest music decade of the modern era...and the bands of the 70s were FRIGGIN AMAZIN!!!

I mean, do people even have horn sections anymore? Do ya'll even know what a horn section is???

I wasn't a big fan of his, he went a little too disco for me.

If you like him you'd probably like Lenny Williams too...pretty similar stuff.
