Australian rockers INXS will seek a new lead singer through a US reality TV series, Rock Star, The Sunday Telegraph reported today.

The group, once fronted by the late Michael Hutchence, has teamed up with Survivor and The Apprentice creator Mark Burnett to find a front man.

They signed a deal late last week with Mark Burnett's company MBP, after "a bidding frenzy" between the major US networks, he said.

Rock Star will follow INXS's journey as the group auditions singers from five continents in an American Idol-type competition for wannabe rockers to replace Hutchence, who died in late 1997.

Band members Garry Beers, Kirk Pengilly and brothers Jon, Tim and Andrew Farriss will work with hopefuls on new material.

The winner will record an album and tour the globe with INXS.

INXS hatched the idea behind Rock Star themselves and pitched it to Burnett earlier this year.

"After Michael died, we wanted to search the world for a new singer but didn't know how we could do that effectively," Tim Farriss said.

"By having Mark and everyone at MBP embrace the concept, we've found a fantastic way to make that happen."
