    Jam-On The Groove - Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

    October 23rd Podcast

DJ Dogtrane rocks the funkin house with some classic Hip-Hop dopeness this week! Once again the master class is in session, and Professor Dogtrane is in rare form! Get yo mashed-up, mixed-up, sliced-up, funked-up grooviness here!

I decided to go on an all out Jazz excursion this week, blending different feels and styles. Of course, I kept the funk injected and the groove intact, but do not mistake, this week was about the Jazz! Here's my playlist:

    Solaris - "Misinterpretations"
    Freddie Hubbard - "Gibraltar"
    Cedar - "Transcendent Spheres"
Steely Dan - "Home At Last"
Horace Silver Quintet - "The Jody Grind"
    Wayne Shorter - "Devil's Island"
    George Duke - "Yanah Aminah"
    Cesar Mariano - "Metropole"
Hugh Masakela - "Child Of The Earth"
Dexter Wansel - "Theme From The Planets"

    ENJOY!

And every block from all around
Comes runnin' to the park when they hear the sound
And soon the word's spreadin' through our part of town
    "Yo, 40 Park y'all, Jam-On's gettin down"

I'll try it out. I didn't realize that Groove Theory was on it.

I LOVE Me'shell, so yes I do love that track. I like Maxwell. Groove Theory is okay. Like I said, it has some very good songs on there that I can really get with. Wendy is the one we need to work on.

Me'shell's music is bo-ring to me....and it sounds like farts. Maxwell is a novelty act in my mind.

I really like Me'Shell. I saw her live way back when she was touring to promote Plantation Lullabies. She's an amazing bassist, and I like that jazzy flavor to her music. I've kind of lost touch with what she's doing, though, so I have no idea whether I like what she's doing now.
I never could get into Groove Theory. I mean, I can't really bring myself to finish listening to one of their songs-- a friend of mine gave me Amel's solo album on mp3, and I think I ended up deleting it. Same with Maxwell; something about those two acts just seems watered-down and bland to me. To be honest, I think that a lot of the appeal of Amel Larrieux and Maxwell is in the way they look. I don't hear people talking about how good their music sounds, as much as I hear people talking about how good they look.

This is what got me on Amel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxXbuTLjsvk

It was the best of her, for me, though. The album is alright, but it didn't all hit me the way this song and video did. I wanted more just like it, and didn't feel that. Groove Theory I've always sort of casually liked, but not enough to get the albums.

I do like Plantation Lullabies for Me'shell. I've never heard something of hers and thought, "wow, that sucked". I'm always like... yeah, she's a really cool person. She seems so talented and original and intelligent. Those are traits that miss a lot of "artists". And she's strong, but still vulnerable. I like that.

I can get the whole "bland" feel being discussed, but not everyone is smash wow in your face. Maxwell is just some mellow r&b nice music. He's got a really good voice. I don't think he's that handsome, so I don't know if it's really his looks that he's riding on. I like the smoother r&b and things sometimes associated with "neo soul", so I'm not too picky there. If you play it, I'll listen to it and enjoy it. It's just nice on the ears.

    Jam-On The Groove - Saturday, November 13th, 2010

    November 13th Podcast

Dogtrane hits us hard with a Disco/House music mash-up monster mix this week! He starts things off with some ethereal, floating Poppy flavor, just to set you up, then glides into the 4/4 mayhem! All the while combatting my technical issues at the controls, don't know how he does it! Bumpin' set!

I then followed with with an all '70s Funk Fest! Nothing but classic '70s funky beats and bass lines galore! Felt so good that I will probably do the same thing again next week! Here's my playlist:

    War - "Slippin' Into Darkness"
The Jimmy Castor Bunch - "Potential"
    Manu Dibango - "New Bell"
Parliament - "Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk (Pay Attention)"
    Mandrill - "Fencewalk"
    James Brown - "Super Bad"
    Roy Ayers - "Running Away"
Mass Production - "Welcome To Our World"
    Cloud One - "Atmosphere Strut"

    ENJOY!

I like it too, but I wish it weren't such a carbon copy of the original. The only thing that's really different from the original is that this cover has a better bassline.
