    Pop culture garbage

I'm working on a music video for my English project. The class topic is garbage, so I recorded a cover of Speech's "Brought to you By (Music and Life), and now I'm trying to turn it into a music video.

I want to point out things in it that are garbage in pop culture. THe chorus goes something like, "brought to you by sprite, thugs, and sean jean, tommy hilfiger, phat farm, and vh1," so I have that much already.

So what I'm asking is that you guys just list whatever images/ideas you can think of that I might be able to include as filler for the video.

    So far I have:
    - ipod silhouette ad
    - top billboard chart
    - mtv
    - corporate flag of america
    - myspace

"that's pretty deep stuff. that's not, 'yo yo yippy yo yo bling bling, smack a bitch.'"
"when i eat chicken nuggets....they don't look like they're in pain...but i believe that they were.."

    Two words: Reality TV
“Sometimes we just need someone to show us something we can’t see for ourselves.”

All sugary soft drinks that suck, but we get used to sugar addiction

DJ, tattoos and piercings are cool. Psh.

Is that Speech, from Arrested Development? That was his name, right? That guy is so cool.

I nominate for inclusion the confederate flag. It may not be a corporate thing, but it's (semi-)pop culture garbage. Or, what about Paris Hilton?

I second Louis's idea about supermodel beauty images.

And that's what makes them pop culture garbage. Most people get them because someone told them that they're cool.

So lame. Like, the girls in the club who can't dance for shit just rub all over each other to get attention. Learn how to dance, lame-asses!

You would. In Miami, even the most cultured people are hoodrats.

    Rice rockets
    What????
Sheesh, Wandy. You got the google; look it up.
Do you know the kind of cars in The Fast and Bi-Curious? Those Japanese cars with the suped-up engines and the nitrous? Rice rockets.

    Ironic t-shirts
I create those. Here's my fave: Chap's Dick
That's not an ironic t-shirt; it's a parody t-shirt. Ironic is when one of these 24 year-old hipsters walks around with a shirt with a long gone pop icon that they have no first-hand memory of, or some kind of cheesy slogan that was popular in the 70s or 80s.

    Girl-martinis (e.g. Appletini)
They taste delicous. I would rather have a beer, though.
    Liquor is quicker.

Is Tila Tequila a web-star? If so, I SECOND THAT!
Add her as your friend, Myspacer.

*Blogging....Who cares what you did today?
You do. Then you ask me what's going on, and in a fllippant tone, I say, "read the blog."

    *Bling....What's your diamond's history?
It's from Affika, just like my peeples.

*Rap....Why do you hate your women so much?
Because there's a lot of homothugs out there.

*The notion that going to rehab makes you a better person.
That's why I said, "No, no, no."
There's nothing they can teach me that I can't learn from Mr. Hathaway.

    *Irresponsible, unethical plastic surgeons.
Surgery which involves general anesthesia is always a life-threatening event. If people are roll the dice with their lives for the sake of vanity, then they should not be surprised if they crap out.

    *Pharmaceutical drug advertisements....WTF?
Thanks, doc. I'm not suffering allergy symptoms anymore, but now I can't stop thinking about hanging myself...

*Cell phone earpieces that are worn 24/7
Yeah, like in the Taco Bell drive thru. I don't need to know who wants a chicken burrito supreme.

*People getting mad when you don't answer your cell phone.

    *Telemarketers
I enjoy their exuberance. They discovered such a fantastic product, that they want the world to know about it.

    *Email spam
Don't you want discount V146ra without a prescription?

*Mail advertisements....an experiment on how much paper we can waste.
When they send you business reply envelopes, send them a box with something heavy you were meaning to get rid of, like an old faucet or a brick. They have to pay the postage for that.

*People asking, "How are you?" and then freaking out when you reply with anything other than, "Fine, and you?"
If you're not fine, write about it in your blog, so nobody has to hear about it.

Tattoos are an art form. I like to wear my art on my body as much as put it on a canvas. To quote BB: That's my perogative.

So, does it count if you wear an "ironic" t-shirt because you do remember the advertising campaign/ band and it makes you feel nostalgic? And/ or even though you don't remember some of the ones you own, tehy remind of ones that you did have when you were a kid that they don't make anymore?

*Giving out pills like candy but putting people behind bars who toke.
*Anti-drug campaigns like "above the influence" which just preach conformity (If you smoke dope, no one will like you. And you want people to like you, right?)
*Anti-smoking campaigns who exploit children ("Dammit kid, your mother just died! Can't you at least cry a little harder for the camera?!")
*Pretending like there's no class system in this country (1% of the population gets 21% of the income -- because being born to the right parents means you totally deserve it.)
*Reality TV shows about sweet 16 parties and weddings that cost over $100,000 when half the people in the country have to choose between health insurance and food.

I personally am not into tattoos, but I like what it can be for people. As far as piercings go, I've been pierced since I was 15 and not because I was told it was cool, but because I could sense it's coolness and felt it was a part of me. Not everyone who finds these things beautiful are followers. Some people feel a genuine connection with things.

That's like saying that everyone that gets a tan, or their hair done, or nails done, is a follower. But that's more socially acceptable, so I guess those people aren't as likely to be accused of being followers. Ironic.

Anyway, I think some piercings (like my nose ring) are cool and sexy because it's on ME, and you don't have to agree, but I'm the shit. Thank you.

Don't get defensive, girlies. Have you forgotten that I spend much of my free time with people who are far more tattooed and pierced than either of you? There is a whole subculture that revolves around body mods, and that's fine. However, that's a subculture. The mainstreaming of it, however, has much higher visibility, hence the reference to it as pop culture. Every other white chick between ages 18 and 35 these days has a silly "tramp stamp" sitting right above her crack, or some Chinese symbol on their leg that they can't even read. That's banal, that's being a follower, and that's exactly what I'm talking about.

If you are doing that, then it's not ironic, is it?

Let me break it down for you:
If I wear a T-shirt that says "CHiPS," I'm nostalgic.
If I wear a T-shirt that says "Keep On Truckin'," I'm ironic.

*Giving out pills like candy but putting people behind bars who toke.
That's not a pop culture icon. Stay on topic.

*Anti-drug campaigns like "above the influence" which just preach conformity (If you smoke dope, no one will like you. And you want people to like you, right?)
I love those anti-drug commercials. Did you see the fake one on "Harold & Kumar"?
Yeah, I know you saw that movie. <wink, wink>

*Anti-smoking campaigns who exploit children ("Dammit kid, your mother just died! Can't you at least cry a little harder for the camera?!")
So, you are annoyed by public service announcements that tell the truth?

*Pretending like there's no class system in this country (1% of the population gets 21% of the income -- because being born to the right parents means you totally deserve it.)
The class strata in our country are more permeable than anywhere else in the world. Besides, after you've been a landlord for as long as I have, you come to realize that the concept of class egalitarianism is false.

*Reality TV shows about sweet 16 parties and weddings that cost over $100,000 when half the people in the country have to choose between health insurance and food.
I agree, but what do lavish parties for undeserving brats have to do with our insurance crisis?

This thread developed into an interesting topic. Anyway...

I didn't sleep last night so I could finish the editing on time. I ended up not needing extra stuff because we extended and reshot a scene at the last minute, but thank you for the suggestions. I think I'll put them to use this summer and try to make another video with a broader subject than music.

So here's the final product, all recorded with a borrowed video camera and a 75-cent microphone I got on eBay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAy5-3PjD_I

Elizabeth, yeah, it's Speech from Arrested Development. His solo stuff is amazing.

I bet! He seems really creative and aware.

I know it's too late for suggestions, but also what occurred to me-- Hooters, and Girls Gone Wild.

Wendy, I'm a little late in telling you... I disagree with the blog thing, but really agreed with some of the other stuff, specifically drug ads and "how are you". Cool.

In the music, your voice is too low to hear at times.
Maybe you should have splurged, and bought a 76-cent microphone...
