    vocal effects/vocoders/whatever

This question is mostly for Coz, but if anyone else knows stuff, please let me know.

Coz: I asked you something about vocal effects a long time ago, and you said to get a vocoder thing. Well, I've recently become more interested in something like this and want help figuring out what I need. I was trying to find stuff on ebay, and I came up with various Digitech vocal effects processors, a Korg synth, and a couple smaller things like a Boss voice transformer. I tried to find software to try out, but I didn't have much luck. I play a little keyboard and have wanted a synth for a while, so I was wondering if the Microkorg synth/vocoder would be something I should get.

Basically, I want to produce sounds like this: vocalmix.mp3[823kb]

    any suggestions?

OK, the first song is using a voice processor like Autotune or Melodyne. Melodyne is BY FAR the dopest thing on the market for that, and it's software. What kind of computer are you going to use?

The 2nd song sounds like it might be the same thing, but it might be a vocoder as well mixed in lightly.

The 3rd is all vocoder. There are some pretty dope vocoder plug-ins out there, but for hardware I would cop some 2nd hand vintage gear off of ebay or something. I still swear by the classic Roland vocoders, and seriously miss my SVC-350.

I'm going to be using my dell laptop until i can get a good desktop. I'll download the melodyne demo and try it out. The only roland vocoder i found on ebay starts at $1,000. What are your thoughts on the cheaper, 250 dollar korg?

thanks for the info. I'll see if I can do anything fun with demo software and stuff.

well, i got melodyne, but all i've been able to figure out so far is pitch correction and note stretching.

somebody needs to invent a program that just has an "apply cool vocal effect" button and that's it. it shouldn't take a 700 dollar program to do that.

the software IS cool, though. i never even imagined software that could do what it does.

If you take out all of the vibrato from the notes, in other words pull it out until all of the squiggly lines are straight, you'll get the effect that you're looking for.

It is absolutely the DOPEST program for vocals I have ever seen!

It's in the same column where you shift the notes: Edit Pitch modulation. You'll see.

oh $h!t it worked! does the autotune thing you were talking about do the same thing?

I wish they wouldn't charge so much for this. everybody should be able to have it! I'm going to live by that pitch fixer upper thing.

thanks again for the suggestions/help. i searched all over for "vocal effects software" before and didn't really find anything good.

Autotune is the original program that was used for the effect, ala Cher "Do You Believe In Love". It will do it in real time, but it doesn't do it as well or with as much control. It's much easier and better to do it in Melodyne, just 'Select All' notes and take out the pitch modulation... piece of cake.

You are so innocent man! You don't know how to get these programs...ahem...at a discount? I haven't done PC music stuff in a long time else I would hook ya up. Ask Hax for a hand, if you still can't find them let me know.

what's it mean when you import a wav and it won't show you squiggly lines? i downloaded a few acapellas to further test the effect, but nothing i downloaded would let me have squigglies.

ps. the latest (or maybe all of them) version works for either mac or pc

Yeah, they all work for both platforms, but of course it's different software for each. The Mac app won't work on the PC and vice versa.

Do you have it in the right mode? If you have it in the pitch edit column you should see the lines.

how come if i straighten everything, it mostly just sounds like a cassette being eaten by a tape player? half of the words get so deformed that instead of sounding roboty throughout the whole thing, it just sounds messed up.

and how do you use autotune? there's nothing to run after i install it. i'm guessing i could've used it as a plugin with fruityloops, but i don't have that anymore, and i could never get plugins working anyway. is there some kind of standalone thing like melodyne?
