Where are you at in your life?

I just wanted to say hey to all of you guys and give you an update on what is going on with me. I haven't been around here too often in the past few months and so I'm sure I've missed some things, which gave me the idea for this post. I've missed you guys! Coz, Wheeljak, that means you too!!!!

What's going on in your life right now? Anything you wanna share?

As for me, well, I have a stupid job in retail that drains me. I am trying to make money before I start grad school next fall. Maybe an internship this summer as well. Marc and I are still together (of course)...about 5 years and 4 months. I've been working on some portraits of myself, a series, in style of other artists but done in a photography format. But overall, i mostly busy with work. I still find sometime to write music and create art, but you know how the real world is. I miss college dearly and i can't wait to return

at any rate, here are some of my portraits. mayeb you art buffs can guess the artists who's style i am trying to channel? there lo-res so that they'd fit in the post. feel free to share some feedback.

I don't know which artist you are trying to channel but you look like Janis Joplin. That's you, right?

    Good for you.

Every job drains. That's the nature of work: giving.

Congrats on the 5 years. (months aren't that important to me)

I am remodeling a bathroom - myself. I have everything out except the tub/shower shell and the ceiling (yes, walls have been stripped of dry-wall - I am doing it all). That is a fun challenge. Work is boring, the politics suck and the company care less and less about people. Whatever - maybe it is time to change jobs again... Kids are sick, wife is coming down with it, I probably won't catch it (rarely do), so I will pick up more tasks around here...

I am nowhere near an art buff. I don't really know much about art other than "that's cool" and "that sucks". Artists names? Bob, Jim, Doug, Suzy, Jane... whatever.

I would guess, though, that the first pic looks like it is in the style of the Mona Lisa painting. Is that it? Who was that? Da Vinchy?

The only b&w artist I know is Ansel Adams - but he usually does outdoor nature scenes, right?
    Peace

SuperKristen! It's very nice to have you back.

Thanks for posting the photos. It's good stuff; I didn't even know that you do photography. Because I'm largely ignorant of the work of prominent photographers, I can't even venture to guess the style that you were quoting in each photo. I don't remember having a good time in Photo I, so a lot of the stuff I learned back then has pretty much been shoved into the cluttered archives in the very back of my head.
    • The first reminds me a little of the cover of Sade's Love Deluxe album, although I think that was done in monochrome. I think it reminds me of that because of the luminosity of the highlights on your skin. Did you grease up for this one? Colorizing this was a great idea; the complimentary hues of the tint on your skin versus the color of the background give a push-pull effect when combined with the low contrast in value. Now that I think of it, this one does remind me somewhat of a self-portrait of Edward Weston that I remember seeing. However, I doubt that that's what you were going for; it seems that every art student I've ever talked to (except me) dislikes Weston's work.
    • The second picture doesn't interest me much. Personally, what I like most about photographic portraiture is the ability to capture the character of a person's face, because you can learn a lot about someone by looking at their face. With the overexposure and the color effects, it becomes less a study of your face, and more a study in color. That's not a bad thing; that may even be what you were going for. It's just something that doesn't really do much for me.
    • The third is my favorite. Because of its high contrast between foreground and background, my eyes were drawn to it first, even though it was the last in the sequence. Also, you get big points for this one. Why? Because most people would be too vain to shoot themselves in close-up with a wide angle lens, 'cuz the result ain't never a glamor shot. However, that's part of the reason why I like this the most; it's the least pretty of the three. I already knew that your face is pleasant to look at; I think the third picture is the only one that doesn't go out of its way to reaffirm that.
I would like to see a very hi-res scan of the third shot, because it has such an interesting texture to it. My photo projects for art school never had great texture like that. I didn't have the patience to set up for slow film and long exposures; I was so overextended that semester that I wanted to just get it done fast, even if it was fast and sloppy.

Now... what I've been up to.
Well, I don't really have much new to mention; my primary job is that of a landlord, so much of my day-to-day life involves fixing toilets-- and I don't think many people would enjoy listening to descriptions of that. I miss expressing my creativity visually; I haven't drawn or painted in months. It's hard to keep up with that when nobody in my local circle of friends has any artistic inclinations that I know of. I'm a maywannabe writer who has lately received some really great encouragement from the people who I've shared my stuff with. I don't know what I'm going to write about next, but I'm trying to become a better writer daily so when the idea does come, I'll be ready to run with it. I don't think I'd necessarily list "Get published" as one of my major life goals, but it would be nice...
I'm happy with my social life. I have a small circle of friends, but they are all gold. My love life? That's another story, and a dull story at that. I don't call myself "the monk" for nothing...
"What, Wheeljak? You fell in that open manhole?
    How is that possible?
I posted 'CAUTION: OPEN MANHOLE' on my Facebook page!"

Good to hear from you lady.

Me, I am organizing my 20-year class reunion that will go down Nov. 26th (this Saturday). At this point I just want it over, but I'm somewhat interested in seeing my high school classmates. When I ran for senior class vice president, had I known it was going to be the position for LIFE, I probably would have reconsidered.

The Father's letter is for you. His ways are higher than ours. It takes time to grow a seed and bear good fruit. Rebuke the devourer. The battle is the Lord's and He will be victorious.

If that makes me crazy then that's okay.
Reverence for the Father and his instructions outweighs all else.
In all directions, love one another give us grace for agreement with Your will.
    Leaving all else behind us.
I love you God; show me the real truth not idols.
