Damn, for a second there I thought Mussina was going to go the distance.

I'm not a Yankee fan, but I was rooting for Mussie all the way.

For the record, I really don't care and was simply teasing you. My team, the Mariners (I'm from Seattle), sucked so bad this year it was embarassing. At least they weren't the worst in baseball, but they came awfully close.

One would have thought, though, that the Red Sox would have done a little better. I can tell you right now that there will be a lot of weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth on Monday at work though. People who grew up here in Boston are pretty fanatical. It would be even better if the Seahawks don't drop the ball today (figuratively and literally) and stomp the Patriots. We'll just have to see.

I swear that all Seattle sports teams as a whole are more cursed than any other team on the planet.

Ichiro by himself doesn't keep you from the second rung from the bottom.

I was watching the game until Farscape came on, I mean come on, a man has to have his priorities straight. So I kept tabs on the score via my computer throughout the rest of the game. That was one *long* freaking game. Both teams had so many chances to end it I thought it was going to drag on and on till they ran out of pitchers, honestly. In the end, though, two outs at the bottom of the 14th, with a man on first and a man on second, Ortiz singled, and Johnny Damon runs his heart out to make it from second to home. What a way to end the game.

At least the last two games have been good, right Coz?

Here's something written by 1 of my wife's co-workers...and a fellow rabid Yankee fan. It's pretty good.

    Simply the Best

    *

As a lifetime Yankee fan, you might expect this piece to have the typical partisan slant associated with a one-sided assessment of the best rivalry in sports.* It will not.* This is simply a thank you letter to both the Red Sox and the Yankees for providing astoundingly good theater for all of us and turning the diamond into a stage that momentarily - and rightly or wrongly - will become more important than anything else on the planet.* Presidential race?* Who cares.* Iraq? Not tonight.* Flu vaccine shortage.* Please.****

    *

This is already the best post-season series of all time.* Reggie or Bucky in 78?* Not even close.* Fisk in 75? Um ... no. The Giants win the pennant? Too long ago. Gibson limping around the bases? Pablum.* Joe Carter's walk-off? Horseshit - I mean it was Toronto for god's sake.* Consider the history between these two teams, throw in last year's classic, mix in the A-Rod saga, sprinkle with a little owner and GM trash talk ....* and then think about this series and it's obvious.*

    *

Down 0-3 Red Sox fans all but gave up.* I know there's always a glimmer of hope that die hard Red Sox fans maintain, but it's awfully difficult to hold onto when no team in the history of baseball has even forced a game seven after being down 0-3.* What the Red Sox as a team have done for their fans is simply astounding.* Quality pitching, hitting, running (Roberts!!!) and most importantly managing, have brought the Red Sox and their fans to the brink of ecstasy.* Schilling showed heart and grit and regardless of the outcome of the series Boston fans will LOVE him forever -- and they should.** For those fans, to be so low and climb back to so high over such a short period of time is a ride on an emotional roller coaster that neither the team and their fans have ever before faced.* Yes, Red Sox fans have felt true pain and seen hopes dashed at the last instant (like last year's ALCS), but those fans have never been down in an 0-3 hole and then watched their talented team claw its way back into the realm of real historic possibility.* And Big "Mo" no longer automatically means the Yankee closer -- because today in Boston it stands for momentum for the self proclaimed "Idiots."* By the same token, while this team bringing itself and its fans back from the dead may already have been a moral victory, the dagger in a Boston fan's heart from a loss in game seven tonight would be the most painful moment in their history -- yes, even more painful than Buckner.

    *

Up 3-0, Yankee fans mentally put another "W" notch on their long list of Boston beatdowns.* But then, they watched blown leads, better pitching and better base running [after Manny's debacle] bring Beantown back from the brink.* Consider the roller coaster for New Yorkers:* Matsui, A-Rod and Sheff couldn't make outs for a while and looked like they were part of the 1927 team.* Lieber and Moose looked like the spawn of an illicit affair between Cy Young and Roger Clemens.* Then all of a sudden, those fans witnessed Mariano's fallibility, David Ortiz's effort to displace Reggie as Mr. October and a host of Yankee bats that went a bit limp.* Boston has already made history and can make it again with another win.* Losing to Boston would be one thing - losing to Boston in this fashion would be devastating.** New York is a tense city right now.* New York Yankee fans .... and this is sacrilege to say . are nervous.* Very nervous.* That is not a typical feeling for a Yankee fan and the collective ulcer engulfing the city is palpable -- you can feel it.* But there is still hope and in some cases hubris.* I heard the number 1918 mentioned four times - by different people - on one subway ride today.* I heard on that same ride how "Jeter will do something to win it like he always does" tonight.

    *

While it is impossible and frankly unnecessary, to predict or even prognosticate the outcome of tonight's game, it is clear that a win will be the greatest win in either team's history -- and the greatest high for either team's fans.* That's right -- I said it.* Better than any World Series, better than any other playoff game, better than Don Larsen, better than 1918, better than Fisk in 75, better than last year or 1978* .... just better.** By the same token, a loss for either team will be their worst ever.* Worst for the Yankees because it will be one of the biggest "chokes" in history.* Worst for the Sox because it will be the most emotionally draining loss ever.*

    *

While fans for both sides are alternately nervous, excited, freaking out, bewildered, pumped, paralyzed, fearful and hopeful -- I -- am also thankful.* For the drama.* For the history.* For the emotion ... and for the fact that these two teams have given us simply the best.* Ever.

    *

Good luck to both teams.* And good luck dealing with it all to both of their fans.

Yeah, that was pretty darn amazing. You have no idea the euphoria that exists here in Boston right now. Not only did the Red Sox win, The Evil Empire was humiliated beyond imagination. You just have to feel bad for the Yankees right now. No, wait, you don't. They've won enough, time for someone else to have a chance.

In related news, sorry about your health, Coz. Hope you're feeling better soon. Anything I can do to help, just holla.

there we go, just right. keep walking...
