I didn't know where else to post this, so here goes.

My screen came with my computer, it was fine until two days ago. Now it "streaks" color horizontally across everything. Meaning when I write it gets dark across the whole screen because the words are in black. If something is light the 'shadow' that it leaves across the whole screen is much less visible, so its a scale thing.

I am just wondering if this means that my screen is totally F'ed and I need a new one or if something internally is wrong and something needs to get it fixed.

this sux, porn just doesn't look the same :lolbonk:

    thanks in advance

look on the monitor for a "degause" button, or if you have a montior with a on screen menu flip through it looking for the "degause" option.

Where ever you find it, do it and see if it clears up.

Yeah, I fiddled around with all the options. The contrast and stuff could make the problem less obvious, but it is still there.

I went to control panel, fudged around there, changed the color scheme, color mode, etc, but none of that helped either.

How old is the monitor? Is the effect balanced...in other words, is it evenly proprtioned across the screen from the center of the text or whatever the color source is? If you are watching animation or movies or anything with motion does the effect move as well?

Its not that old, a few years.

Yes that is correct, it can and does move with changing color horizontally.

Think of this as a "each line gets a color" scheme. The line scheme is determined by the overall average of color in that horizontal line. When I look at Coz's sig I see pretty dark color across the whole screen from the top of the pictures to the bottom because both of his pictures are dark. I can still make them out because the aveage of colors across the whole screen horizontally is less dark than the pictures.

Another way to think about this is when I start to type a line of text the screen looks relatively normal. But the time I reach the end of the line there is a gray streak across the whole horizontal section of the screen that covers everything(it gets more dark with each letter I type - it's gradational). The typing is darker, so I can see it, but its annoying with 20 gray streaks across the page.

This is nothing I've ever seen, just wondering if this damn thing is broken?

It sounds like a really crappy monitor. I've seen this effect before on some of our old monitors at work. (Mostly on our old television monitors.)

Do you see any ringing as well? Ringing occurs on the right side of objects with sharp edges... for example if you have a white screen with a solid black rectangle in the middle, check to see if there is a ringing pattern close to the right hand side of the rectangle.

This is a long shot, but have you placed any speakers next to your monitor? You can really screw things up if you put a powerful magnet anywhere near a CRT. The degauss button won't always help in that case.

    Good luck...

That's what I was thinking but the effect shouldn't move with action on the screen then.

I don't think that there is a ringing pattern.

There are speakers near the screen. Manufacturer put them there. I doubt that would screw it up(unless they are stupid), but maybe a magnet was put too close to the screen at some point... I am not sure.

Nah, if the speakers are attached they should be properly shielded.

Seriously, smack that shit good a couple of times on the side yo and see what happens. May be something loose in there.

OK, we have a new monitor and the problem still exists. I assume this narrows the possibilities down.

Does anyone have an idea what it could be now? I know there are different cards for the computer, is there a screen or picture card? I don't know.

There is also a device manager problem because the new stuff was put on without taking the old stuff off. I didn't do that and it can wait I guess. Well I am tired, gotta get some rest.

    thanks again in advance
