my pcmcia sound card and firewire drive aren't playing nice, and i think i figured out why, but how do i get them there own irqs? i looked around in the bios but can't find anything. do i have to reinstall the whole os? i don't need the integrated modem at all, so irq 5 is up for grabs if i can move the integrated sound card and 3, 6, 7 aren't even being used at all............help?

  2. #2

reboot > hit f2 when you see the dell screen > look around in the bios for the internal modem and see if you can disable it. let me know if that works...if not then we'll move to step 2

try this if the modem trick doesn't work...

go to your control panel and click on "system" then click on the hardware tab, then select "device manager" find what your trying to change, I'd try the sound card first, select the properties for that item, then click on the resources tab, select the irq and change it to the next empty number...close out > restart and see if that fixes it...I'd try the bios trick first you might get luckly and not have to fight it.

i disabled the modem and it's off the list, no help though. the problem happens really while i'm reading from/writing to the disk while the sound card is in use (which kinda both need to be happening to record something). yeah i've tried changing the irq # under resources, everythings greyed out though..."settings based on (empty dialog box)", checked "use automatic settings" box, "change setting" button....it's all greyed out though and a text field underneath says "no conflicts", do i have to boot up in safety mode or something else? but isn't xp spose to be all cool with it's irq stuff though? and it's not a cheap sound card "100% Plug & Play compatible under Windows and MacOS, and being able to share interrupts. The card itself will only use one interrupt (IRQ) for all functions.......Complete interrupt sharing".........it couldn't be something else, could it? hey worse come to worse i could trim down my files to just what i need and stick it all on the 40 gig 5400 rpm internal drive and hope it flies, but by all means step 2.

    and shut up coz

since it's a new computer it might not hurt to call dell and see if they have any bright ideas because I don't have any dell tech manuals that go with the newest models so all I can do is guess though it.

Do either of them work at all FrEk, and if not have they ever?

If they did, what was the circumstances when they stopped working?

Good thing I've worked on PCs for so long, 'cause most Mac users don't even know what an irq is.

ok i brought the drive into work to test it out there.....we've got a system there real similiar to mine, 2.5 p4 running an rme pci card, cubase, xp i'm running 2.5 p4m running an rme pcmcia card, cubase, xp......drive runs perfectly over there, reading from/writing to/writing to while reading from.......all perfect, one difference is the firewire and pci are on different irqs there but the same irqs on my laptop although i get the feeling xp should be able to do the irq stacking without a problem......ok lemme bring this thing home and give it another go. unhook my soundcard before start up, the drive is running without a hitch loading from/to, reading/writing/both, flawless (well good 1/2 sec. latency, but i'm going on the integrated card so still normal) ok shutdown, plug in rme card, start up.....not the worst performance actually reading from but as soon as i record enable and start writing to the drive in real time...nothing but crackle (excellent latency though, blaring static rite on time).....ok same restart unplug drive leave rme, do some internal drive stuff......perfect, not a problem at all. so i could bug glyph (the only guys who still havent answered email, dell and rme did within hours..not really helpfull responses but hey) try reinstalling os, fuck around with settings, or shop around for different harddrives hoping one works (but i doubt its a hardware conflict cause the same drive worked fine with the pci version of my card), or just say fuck it and settle for the internal 40 gig 5400 rpm and hope i can get a managable track count off it and just get back to actually making music and save the refund for some nice mackie monitors or something. well the 3rd option sounds the best so i guess i'll just dump most a my samples (but i've got way more shit stored than i use so 40 gigs just may do it if i start being selective and maybe move my porn to a few cds too) and i guess more self contained is nicer, one less piece of hardware to worry about so i'm still happy

well, crackling is a very common occurance, its usually just because your latency is set too low when you're recording, you should definately try turning your latency settings for the card up and try re-recording. the other thing is that you can't have your hammerfall sharing an irq, so you gotta free up one so it can have its own, or its most likely going to crackle like that. so go into your bios and disable something you're not using, or figure out something to free up an irq and then make sure the hammerfall uses it by itself. also make sure dma is enabled and working on your hard drive, you should be able to set that in your bios or even from windows, i'm not sure how xp works with dma exactly, but that will ensure top reading/writing speeds for the drive.

He tried the latency thing to no avail.

DAMM!!! I should have looked at that IRQ list more closely yesterday. Yeah, thats exactly the problem, the soundcard and the firewire controller are sharing IRQ addresses (with a whole bunch of other shit too!!!).

Go into the bios...the Hammermill should be able to use IRQ 7 without a prob, since that is usually used for soundcards anyway. Then try and move your IEEE 1394 (firewire) card to it's own IRQ, or at least 1 that isn't so cluttered. Push comes to shove you can have it share IRQ 5 with your modem and then disable the modem in device manager.

yeah latency was the first thing i checked, maxed in cubase and up to 1024 or even 2048 samples in the audio cards control panel. i have a few irqs available and disabled some devices i wasn't using and things but the irqs still stayed at there settings. xp don't let me change irqs and neither does my bios, but i think there is a way to do it if i start up in safe mode or something or wipe the computer and make the settings manually with a reinstall, but i don't know the more i look into this and the more i consult people the more it seems the irq stacking shouldn't really be a problem, but what do i know. my ops manager at work is really like an authority with computers music apps especially and he thought i was crazy for thinking it was an irq problem with xp, but i hear half and half that it's fine/it's definitely a problem, so i don't know. is dma the setting setting the same as enabling write caching where you have to use the safely remove hardware to turn off the drive? its the "optimize for performance" option as appose to the "optimize for quick removal" option, i tried both of those with the same results but i havent found anything that says dma specifically in the os or the bios. i still have the drive but seem to be in the same spot, either way i'll live...external drive would be nice, can live with internal so long as a can get maybe 10 track tops reading at once which should be fine, and i aint miking a drum set or nuthing so recording will really only ever be one stereo track at a time, maybe i should give it a good track count test this weekend before i dump the drive. if it works, fine screw the drive. anyways, you got any new stuff to upload atma?

hahaha,....that's why i put it in bold, italicized it, and double spaced around it!! can't see for lookin in your golden years huh....hehehe

but yeah my bios don't let me do nuthin like that, even the dell we have at work lets me do that shit (well only for the pci cards though) but i heard something that once the bios passes shit on to the os the os makes up its own mind about irqs, but again this whole irq thing is new to me

often times if you install the card into a different pci slot, the pc will assign it a new irq number, assuming there's a free one for it to use. usually windows will sort out your irq's fittingly for each device unless you have too much shit, in which case things start sharing irqs. it might be helpful to look through your motherboards manual if you still have it, as it will likely talk about how to fuck with the irqs.
just try to find something you dont need, like if you're not using all that usb stuff, disable it in the bios. or instead of using a communication port for your mouse, use the ps/2 port instead, and that will free up an irq. once you have some shit freed up, reinstall the card and it should assign it a free irq.

His computer is a laptop so I don't think he has pci slots or a mouse either for that matter.

If he had a Mac he'd be making music...heheheh.

"IRQs??? We don neeed no steeenkin IRQs!!!

Hey FrEk, can't you go into Device Manager, right click on the soundcard and the firewire controller, go to properties, and change the IRQs in there? I can't see why not...you do have administration rights in the user that you're using right?

If that doesn't work, just try the good old-fashioned Windows 95 Fits Of Frustration move. Go to Device Manager and delete your soundcard, your firewire card, your USB shit, your modem, and whatever other non OS essential stuff you can find from the profiles. Make sure you have all of your driver CDs and your XP install disc handy 1st!!! Then, reboot the computer and let XP sort everything out and install all of the devices all over again. Chances are you'll get a better IRQ line-up. I used to have to do that shit all the fukkin time, tho never in XP. It should work tho.

yeah i think i'll give it a good try this weekend, i'm thinkin though that uninstallin just the soundcard/drive drivers wouldn't do nothin cause the pcmcia and ieee1394 controllers will still be there and there on irq 11. yeah a fresh install of the os might bring more luck i'll see

  16. #16

save your shit, install and plug up EVERYTHING you want on it then do an OS restore while all that stuff is hooked up.
