A group voyeur turned group member

I have visited PMDAWN.NET for years now, but have only posted once or so. Therefore since I'm still pretty much a visitor (or voyeur really), I thought I would quickly introduce myself:

* I'm 28, live in CT, and I've been a PM Dawn fan for 11 years.

* I play and write songs on acoustic guitar, and these guys are another inspiration for me in this area.

* My favorite PM Dawn song (or any song for that matter) is definitely "Apathy...Superstar?" -- I can't say enough about this song. Melody, lyrics, message (as I understand it), piano, energy, vocal delivery! Never tire of it. Sincerely, thank you Be for writing that masterpiece!!!

* My favorite PM Dawn moment was coming home in early Jan several years ago to a message on my phone from Be apologizing for FUC#KED Music's delay. Even though mine never came (or was lost in the mail or something), it never mattered because of the awesome message (and I have a friend who has it, too, so I can borrow it). It's all good!

Thanks for the warm reception! Yes, I see it is bumpy but entertaining here. Like I said, I have followed it for some time -- maybe 4 years or so, so I feel like I already know some of you. And to occasionally hear (or rather see) emails, ideas, arguments, thoughts from one of my major artisitc influences -- that's incredible.

I noticed in your first post that you write songs. I also play guitar and write my own songs. I was wondering what type of music your songs are?? I know you said you write on accoustic guitar, but what style? Like Blues or pop or Jazz or what?

I have a very broad taste in music and love many different styles, so my music contains elements of all the styles that I love the most. I have some accoustic music, some blues, some rock...even a little classical influence at times. I have a small home studio in my house, basically consisting of a tascam 788 portastudio, (Which I just recently bought), and a Roland Dr. Rhythm 660 Drum Machine...and I play everything on my songs except for lead guitar solos, and vocals.

Before I bought the new recorder, I used an old Fostex 4-track machine. It has been kind of weird learning to use the new machine cause I was so used to my old one...

But I have been writing for years, and have tons of home made demos. I find that writing music comes a bit easier than lyrics. I DO write lyrics but it is more of a challenge for me...the musical parts seem to come more naturally to me.

That has always seemed strange to me, since I am also a poet. I have even recently self-published a book of my work, called REFLECTIONS OF THE SOUL. But somehow my style of poetry writing does not seem to work well when I try to set it to music.

Anyway, whenever I meet someone else that writes songs too...I always enjoy discussing their work with them. So I just figured I'd ask what kind of stuff you do and a little about how you approach the creative process. I find this kind of stuff interesting, and I was just a little curious.

Dammmm...you have a 660? How old are you Poetdude?

I am 34, and yeah...I've had the 660 since about '96 or '97 I think it was...(Although my memory is kinda fuzzy here). I have had it for years. Bought it off a friend since he had owned it for over a year, and never USED it once! I figured since he never used it, then he didn't need to own the damn thing! LOLOLOL It was still sealed in the box when I got it.

I have the same dilemma with lyrics, PD. I am prolific writing lyrics without music; writing melodies and songs sans lyrics is the easiest and my favorite part; BUT writing the two together, or marrying a lyric and song is the most challenging part for me. I write on my acoustic guitar, and am going to splurge for a nice Yamaha keyboard in the next few weeks, too. Perhaps adding to my instrument arsenal will increase my creativity.

Currently, I sometimes use my laptop to record ... and my new toy, the Tascam Pocketstufio 5:

I often carry and read creative-genre books, such as "The Creative Habit," "Nine Muses," or "Poemcrazy" to remind me to find any cracks in my work day and family night to create, even if for 15 minutes a day. Last year we had a son, so my output was at an alltime low -- but I'm learning how to juggle everything now -- including songwriting.

Wonder how Be writes? Journal, computer? Night, morning? Home, outside? I love seeing how some of the best write ... and on what. The best part of the music museum in Seattle was seeing Jimi's lyrics scribbled on hotel stationary or envelopes.

Could have been longer. coz...as I said my memory is fuzzy about exactly when I got it...just know I've had the thing for years! Also, I don't think it was an original model...but maybe one of the later models made....did they ever do a re-issued or updated model on the 660?

Also wanted to join in on the new member hulabaloo! Name's Dan (29) from Ohio and have held PM Dawn as a group i admire since the first album. In fact i recall on road trips wishing to always "torture" my brother with my music(he enjoyed Metallica and what-all) The only bit of my music he enjoyedthat i would bring was the work of PM Dawn. At parties where u am allowed to speak about music i often time break into...."You know what you have to hear" Always got to toss out some props. (not like Carrot-Top---that would be bad and not well received)

I don't play anything except dabbling with my keyboard. I write poetry , like long walks in the...wait.....damn i'm off track. In any case i wanted to be a part of a forum which celebrated a group of artists and individuals such as these guys..

Plus to boot everyone seems to be pretty darn swell round these parts. In any case Nice to be here!

Thanks all! I am doing my random "wake up in the middle of the night" post. You don't get these too often (lucky for me) I suppose it's far better than the "wake up in the middle of the night knife stabbing problem.

In all fairness in regards to the former roadtrips with my brother ....i did have a stack of crap i'd bring with me. P.M. Dawn would even flip into my brother's home mix as well. I have long since left the oppressive reign my brother held(freeeeeedom!!!) ***still i make it point when i am making birthday mixes to toss a song of PM Dawn on there.

Sense of humor? I was. being....Oh wait yes. Righto(wink wink) I'm am a regular ole riot here.

I'm not sure what i did with MS. Pacman other than rock the hell out at it. Normal Pacman i was awful at but the lady-Pac i wielded some serious majesty! Yes good ole grand (freakin miserable cold) Cleveland. All we can do in the winter time is play Ms Pacman honestly. Rufus Wainwright actually said at a concert i went to "Man i thought Canada got cold!"

First of all, I rocked Ms. Pacman last night ... what a mouth!

And second, I salute another hetero Rufus fan! That boy rocks in a strange, tragic, soulful way -- went to his show a couple of years ago, and we all sat cross-legged, barefoot on the floor. Random, but young and perfect in a musically naive way. Loved it!

Wasn't so sure if there were more than one hetero Rufus fan's out there. The man makes some mighty fan music and is a darn hoot to boot. Have been a fan of his and his old man's for a few years running now. ---which leads me to say man i'm tired---

Wait i got more....Actually not much more. One of the more interesting shows i was at was a Fleshtones concert. They were laying on the floor with us. It was a cool weird ---hey where'd my wallet go--- sort of night.

I think he covered "Across the Universe", and he did kill it. Funny thing, Fiona Apple covered that song recently too (a few years ago for the Pleasantville soundtrack) and her version was really good as well (maybe it's because that song just really kicks ass :bowdown: ). The video was amazing. She was singing in a 50s diner and people were trashing the place in really slo-mo, but she was singing normal speed.

I have to agree with you, Chris. I'm a fan, but I think he slaughtered that song and Cohen's "Halleluiah" -- Buckley's version is still my favorite. But his debut album, and the recent one are amazing. Not a huge fan of the middle one, except a song here and there -- especially a cover of his dad's "One Man Guy" ... which takes on a whole new meaning when he sings it.

My favorite "Across the Universe" is the stripped down one on the Anthology.

I am quite fond of his last two albums. Cigarette's and chocolate milk has a fun yet dangerous flavor to it. The newest album i enjoy "Oh what a world" for it's bit of Bolero. I mean who doesn't like a bit of Bolero????

I have heard mixed results about his second album. I think on this last album tho he nailed it.

Also when he was in Cleveland he spoke about this crazy musical his aunt and mother(the McGarrigle sisters) made about Euclid Avenue and even sang a smidge of it....It was catchy!
