OK, Coz. Done a little research on your good self, bit of help from the Oz Tim double act... still got a bit more research to do...

I'm ignorant of early hip hop/rap. I did note that the vocal styles on Jam On It were, IMO, similar to Sugarhill Gang "Rapper's Delight". Never heard it before now, but I quite like the track. Also notice that you apply quite a business head to your music - site is heavy with info and sales links. This should be something Be considers...

couple of questions (If ya don't mind):

I think I've seen posts about you guys still performing... How much of a crowd do you draw?

Do you still make a living from your past music (comfortable or otherwise)? If so, what's the main source of income - royalties, sales or performing?

Who have you performed/colaborated with?

What do you do now apart from performing? Production too?

The only thing similar about our vocal styles is the feigned radio disc jockey voice that us '70s rappers would often employ. They sucked so bad we wouldn't even play that record in the streets. I don't think I even owned a copy until the '90s.

We got totally ripped off for ALL of our royalties, which made me realize that I had better tighten up on the business tip. We produced our first independent record in '86 and started our first record company in '87. From the very moment I met Be (he was Prince then) in about '88 I was trying to get him to at least try and understand the business side of things.

Of course that all depends. Last year and the year before we were on a tour that averaged about 8,000 people per show. The club we performed at in Switzerland pulled at least 1,000 people, just to see us and Goldilocks.

Almost all of the money I'm making these days is from the old Newcleus stuff, the huge majority from "Jam On It". I would say sales, then performing, then royalties.

The list of who we have performed with is crazy long, from Cameo to RunDMC to Jeffrey Osborne to Rick James. I have never done much collaborating though.

BTW, due to "Set Adrift" having so many publishing entanglements I'm willing to bet that Be makes more money off of "I'd Die Without You", which is all his. I know that his ASCAP checks are probably twice as big as mine.

He just had more and bigger hits than I did. :idunno:

I've done my share of sampling, but it was back in a time when people regularly got away with it. I still use a lot of samples when I do Rap, but I only use the royalty free kind. ;)

Theres so much free as in beer or something close. I have heard a few songs made entirely off samples in public domain or CC that where pretty good. The movement heeds a hero.
