There is a whole subculture that revolves around body mods, and that's fine. However, that's a subculture. The mainstreaming of it, however, has much higher visibility, hence the reference to it as pop culture. Every other white chick between ages 18 and 35 these days has a silly "tramp stamp" sitting right above her crack, or some Chinese symbol on their leg that they can't even read. That's banal, that's being a follower, and that's exactly what I'm talking about.
