So ... I know a bunch of us are geeks/nerds of the highest quality , some into servers, some into lego etc ..
what are your most recent acquisitions ?

I have a cybook gen3 e-reader i got for my birthday (think non amazon branded, more open, does more formats version of the kindle)
I load it up with graphic novels, newspapers and novels cath and i purchase and it lasts for about 3 weeks on a single charge , much beloved...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJzR5AXkR28

secondly, I got the dingoo game system and media player
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingoo
picture the bottom half of a nintendo DS but being able to play almost any format of file you put on it from the net or a dvd and also being able to play games from the gameboy, gameboy advance, sega master system, genesis, nintendo, super nintendo and both the capcom and neogeo arcade systems .. working out wonderfully ...

and coming this week,
the HTC magic , the second competitor to the iphone released with googles "android" os, i got the slightly faster 32a version with more ram to use so i can load on custom roms as developers keep grabbing software from new phones from samsung,htc,t-mobile and combining all the best bits .. heres a bastardised rom being used ..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dZgbFr-nE8

all in all .. a very happy geek right here in 2009

as for what else id like in future (spoilt) i could go for a second e-ink device , the cybook is perfect for paperback style books but too small for all graphic novels except japanese ones where the fonts/speech bubbles are large..

what do you guys have/ want ?

giggles you seem to have a g1 ?
you should get one of the local geeks to put some stuff on it like on the youtube link up there, thats actually a rom on a g1 AKA htc dream

Here's my company issue cell phone, this phone goes to Iraq with me, I'm pretty trusting of it when I'm in the field.

all else fails I can throw it at an insurgent.

Also have one of these Fujitsu u810's, almost 5 hours of battery life, and it fits perfectly in the leg pocket of my tactical pants.

Windows XP, Vista came on it, but it causes too much disk I/O for the tiny hard drive so it runs slower. Runs Ubuntu Linux pretty good though, it's not a primary system, just real handy in the field. When I go somewhere I carry a company laptop, my personal laptop, and sometimes the fujitsu. it's really handy to keep the 20 gigs or so of technical documents for the military stuff I work on in my pocket at all times. Screen is high res and tiny, not real fun to look out for a long time, and the keyboard is a pain to type on, so I have an external bluetooth keyboard for any major typing.

It's handy, but not something I'd rely on for major computing stuff. I might end up ditching it for something slightly bigger.

I almost got the first one then saw they were coming out with one that had a network port, which for me is a must with almost 400 movies on a network share. Seems like a cool device and very hackable to play with in the future.

I have the new Droid reserved at a Verizon store...having someone pick it up for me because I'll be deployed to effing Wisconsin freezing to death on the day they release it. Then I have to wait several days to finally get my hands on it. :(

cool - i suspect the droid will be extra awesome when it gets its first rom/firmware update or even with some of the home developer cooked roms..
my order for a htc magic got stuffed up and im sending the italian branded one they sent me back and im going for the hero instead..
nice bonus that built in,GPS turn by turn navigation google just announced for android huh?
let us know your impressions of the droid, from what ive heard and improvements to software will be available through custom roms and the only build/physical issue is the keyboard not being offset

have you tried any phones with only a soft keyboard ? the other night when i got the magic (that i had to send back, sent me wrong one) the soft keyboard was excellent and preempted almost everyword i typed when i was halfway through, for that reason im gonna go with they hero (cause its also way cheaper here) and it has that nice sense UI running on it that samsung doesnt.
check it out here if you havent seen it, slick

yea...ive played with both Ether, but you have to understand Im a "Virgin" when it comes to smart phones, so Im not sure it will matter much... I do have a question though. Do you know if they will up grade them to android 2.0? I mean is that an upgrade that is downloadable, or does it have to be a specific phone?

Etherspin
11-01-2009, 04:46 PM
yep, HTC are quick off the bat, they support their older phones (the UI from the hero is being released for the magic, the previous model) and they announced they are nearly done with 2.0 for the hero as they are adding the sense UI to it before they release it
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_hero_getting_android_20_eclair_update_keeps_se nse_ui-news-1219.php
as for samsung, i havent known them to be great with firmware or supporting a model once its been out a few months, cath couldnt get new firmware or a set of headphones for her a501 (i think!) that she just replaced..
the htc models come with a program "htcsync" which does all the rom/firmware updating for you BTW

Well Tim, I just bought a Dingoo from DealExtreme.com - apparently they are notorious for slow ass shipping, so we'll see how it goes.

ahh - i got mine from weirdass chinavasion website and it took a couple of days..
http://dingoo-scene.blogspot.com/ has a bunch of homebrew extra emulators and old dos games ported and some FPS etc and the company themselves keep writing new stuff for it .. my cousin has currently nicked mine for his hospital appointments for kidney treatments so im in withdrawal..

good luck chief , what kind is your hero ? the sprint version ? im getting a euro style dark brown model but im gonna wait extra long cause im asking them to apply one of those adhesive full body scratch proof cases.
fun! i have a folder of apps ready to go on it, flyscreen looks awesome even if its overkill

Ah well, we'll see how I go. Looking forward to running mame emulator on it - street fighter II!! I've read that it's a bit hard to to some moves cause of the diag thing, but it'll still be awesome for heaps of other shit.

Chief

Almost got the Pre T..Just couldnt get over how sharp the edges were.....I know..I know..stupid reason..LOL.... how are the apps for it?

twhite
11-23-2009, 09:17 AM
The apps for the Pre are getting better with time. The ones I use the most are Pandora (Internet Radio), Tweed (Twitter app), gDial Pro (google voice app), drPodder (podcast app), & Media Remote (control my itunes over wifi using my Pre).

I must admit, the reason I got the Pre is because I wanted a good smart phone that can run multiple apps simultaneously (must have for anyone with ADHD). An iPhone has not been an option because AT&T sucks in my area.

I feel in love with the Pre when I typed in Palm.com by mistake when I meant to research the Blackberry Storm in January. Once I learned about the Pre, there was no way I was going to go with Blackberry. I have been with Sprint/Nextel since 2001 and I have never had a problem with them, so I was glad that they were getting the smart phone that tickled my fancy.
