I know at the radio station we pay services like ASCAP and BMI and they pay the artists on how many times we play the record. My question is when a record gets spun about how much $ does an artist get per spin. Kind of a dumb question because I don't know if it can even be broken down like that.

Don't know about BMI (or care), but the way that ASCAP works is if they pick up the song just once in their survey they'll pay the WRITERS and the PUBLISHERS for that market for that quarter. You get paid by credits, the bigger the market the more the credits. You also get more credits if it's a featured performance (actual song is played) than a background performance (commercials, talkovers, bumpers etc.). Since the survey is random the more the record is played the better the chance of them picking it up.

Hope that helps. :)
