My lame keyboard setup

ok I was talking to Coz about this awhile back, if I get a MIDI cable to go to my computer can I program what I want the keys to sound like? I need to expand beyond the crap sounds and effects this keyboard has.

I'd like to be able to loop a beat on the PC then bring in the keyboard over it... $5 says it's hopeless :mrgreen:

ya, you'd just need to have a midi cable going from your casio's midi out into your pc. but you'll need like a little m-audio midisport or a soundcard with a midi input on it for that to connect into your pc. then basically you'd be using your casio keyboard to control some kind of software in your pc that has its own sounds, like a sampler or a synth.

I have a soundblaster live 5.1 on my desktop with MIDI input, so I guess I just need to grab a cable and go from there

Yup, that and the software and you're golden! You don't even need the audio outputs on your keyboard hooked up. :thumup:

BTW, good idea writing the name of the notes on the keys...did that myself once upon a time ago. :wink:

I used to have that same keyboard! Crazy.
Pretty fresh for it's time and now there's no limit on what kinda sounds you could get out of it with midi.

does your soundblaster have ASIO drivers? it's the standard driver for most audio apps. i know soundblasters have a rep. for consumer applications but they can be a pain in the ass for music, some of them are locked in 48 khz sample rate so check for that too. do a search for midi too, it's a real simple language but it helps to have a good understanding of what it is.

Yeah, his Soundblaster is ASIO, 32 track audio and will do 44.1 (I used to have it). I think it may be 24bit as well but I'm not sure. It also has 2 built-in 32 voice polyphony MIDI synths that play soundfonts. BTW, the technology is Ensoniq so it doesn't sound like a toy (once you find the right soundfonts :wink: ).

Ok, my memory has gotten just worthless! :rofl:

The technology is E-MU, not Ensoniq. It'll hold up to 32 megs of samples, but it's 64 voice polyphony and it does up to 48 MIDI channels.

Audio channels it claims to max out at 131, but I wouldn't know. :wink: It does only do resolutions from 4bit to 16bit, but it claims to have a 32bit audio engine. :donno:

I'm pretty damm sure it has ASIO (would have been my only reason for bothering)...but then, I'm pretty damm sure I ain't too pretty damm sure of nuthin no more! :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

i think the only asio drivers for soundblasters are hacked/unofficial ones, i think they're called kx drivers... something like that. then again, they might finally have official ones out...

The Audigys are all ASIO. I have an Audigy 2 Platinum...it has a latency of 2 ms! :wink:

For the way and types of songs that you seem to be writing I would say Cakewalk, also because it has a built-in soundfont editor. Reason 2.5 is a must...only because it is. Of course grab Cubase SX, 'cause eventually you'll want to graduate to it. And grab all the softsynths you can, you can delete the ones you don't like later. When you're ready to master there's a whole nother grocery list! :wink:

If you need any help finding something let us know. In fact, if ya want, set up an accout for us to upload to (a nice large 1) and I for 1 will start loading it with goodies! :cool:

Oh, and BTW, you should already have that MIDI cable somewhere, it came with your Soundblaster. :)
